Matthew Austin

I have been teaching in both community-based settings and at the university level for over 11 years, both in Oregon and here at The University of Arizona. I have my Bachelors degree in Psychology and my Masters degree in Contemporary Hispanic Studies, both from Oregon State University, and my PhD in Teaching, Learning, & Sociocultural Studies from The University of Arizona’s College of Education. My professional interests include (but aren’t limited to) teaching, curriculum development, and student success. My research interests include LGBTQ+ inclusive policy and practice in K-12 educational institutions, focusing in on the role of LGBTQ+ youth and their allies in impacting LGBTQ+ inclusive policy efforts in their school spaces. 

Outside of my work at UArizona, I am a youth softball coach in my free time, working with young athletes across Tucson. Most importantly, when I’m not on campus or on a softball field, I’m spending time with my seven year old dog Duke, who I will be sharing ample photos of in my courses. In my own undergraduate, I was fortunate to have a strong general education experience, and I’m thrilled to be continuing my own career in helping to facilitate similar experiences for UArizona students!
